Responding to the invitation by the organizers of the
APSA 2006 Annual Meeting, JSpurC and the Standing Group
for Methodology of the ECPR sponsor a short course on
‘Rethinking Publication’.
The course reflects on publication as instrument of
scientific communication from a practical perspective:
how publication standards dictate the choice and
recognition of research results and limit references
researchers can access out of their peers work. Beyond
publication strategies, speakers will contribute views
from different disciplines on the intermediation of
selective publication between evidence, theory and
method in the social sciences. The proceedings of the
debate will be published in the form of a symposium
alongside invited contributions.
Prof. Richard Scheines
will comment on broadening the concept of 'one-best
result'.
Prof. Alan Gerber
will talk about measuring publication bias and
experimentation in political science. Prof.
Robert Boruch
will revisit the concept of significance and practice of
significance testing in the context of meta-analysis.
Interventions by
Prof. David Collier
and
Dr. Bjorn R. Olsen
will contribute to the ambitious, wider
inter-disciplinary perspective on scientific inquiry as
a community enterprise proposed by the course.
The course will include a practical demonstration of the
TETRAD
software and project by Prof. Richard Scheines.
Participants interested are invited to bring their
laptops for a hands on session and encouraged to submit
data sets for trial. We kindly advise that you notify
organizers of your intention to submit data for TETRAD
analysis or bring in related work for discussion as soon
as possible.
Please find the official course announcement on
our website
and on the
APSA short course list.
A detailed outline of the course will be distributed by
e-mail to subscribers.
